First half: Positive start for Burnley
Burnley faced Liverpool for their fourth match. Last season’s champions arrived at Turf Moor with a perfect record — two wins from two — but Burnley were ready to challenge.
Loum Tchaouna made his first start of the season, replacing Jacob Bruun Larsen on the right wing. New signing Florentino Luís, brought in from Benfica on deadline day, began on the bench.
Burnley started positively. Captain Josh Cullen stole possession from Liverpool and fed Tchaouna, who drove forward before laying it off to Jaidon Anthony. Anthony fired from just outside the box, but his shot sailed over the bar. Still, it was a sign of confidence from the winger, who had scored in Burnley’s last two matches.
Liverpool putting on pressure
Liverpool quickly responded, pushing forward with two dangerous crosses into the box, though the Clarets’ defence held firm. The visitors earned a corner, and Ibrahima Konaté rose highest but headed over.
As Liverpool began to dominate possession, tensions rose. Lesley Ugochukwu made a strong challenge on Alexis Mac Allister — one that could arguably have resulted in a red card — but the midfielder escaped with a yellow in the 16th minute.
To cope with Liverpool’s attacking pressure, Burnley were forced to drop deep, maintaining a compact defensive shape inside their own half.
Second half: Burnley fighting for the point
Burnley continued to work very hard to deny Liverpool any space on their side of the pitch, which is unsurprising when facing such a strong side.
Liverpool was able to create some more chances from their left wing, with Gakpo posing problem for the Burnley defence. But Kyle Walker showed his quality and experience, defusing the situations.
With Burnley sitting deep and not allowing Liverpool any space, the Reds had to rely on set pieces to create opportunities. Gravenberch came close to score for Liverpool after a corner kick that bounced around in the Burnley penalty area, then unleashing a heavy shot just over Dubrávka’s post.
Dominik Szoboszlai then tested Dúbravka from distance, but the goalkeeper pulled off an excellent save to tip it wide.
Scott Parker introduced Florentino Luís for Josh Cullen, handing the Portuguese midfielder his Premier League debut.
Liverpool also made changes, and substitute Federico Chiesa nearly broke the deadlock with a header from Andy Robertson’s cross, but it went wide.
84th minute: Finishing the match with 10 players
In the 84th minute, Ugochukwu received a second yellow card for another reckless challenge, leaving Burnley with ten men. Parker reacted by bringing on Joe Worrall for Lyle Foster to strengthen the defence.
Armando Broja came on for Anthony in the 89th minute and becoming the second player of the match to make a Premier League debut for the Clarets.
Liverpool pressed on, and Jeremie Frimpong forced Dúbravka into another strong save.
Just as Burnley looked set to secure a hard-fought point, disaster struck in stoppage time. Frimpong’s cross struck Hannibal Mejbri’s hand inside the box — a clear penalty. Mohamed Salah stepped up and smashed it into the top-right corner, sealing a 1-0 win for Liverpool.
It was a painful repeat of last week’s heartbreak against Manchester United, where Burnley also conceded from a last-minute penalty.
