Burnley vs Leeds: Clarets Claim Vital Win at Turf Moor

Burnley welcomed fellow newly promoted side Leeds United to Turf Moor for their eighth Premier League match of the 2025/26 season — and it was a huge one. After back-to-back defeats, the Clarets needed a response. Scott Parker delivered by setting his team up with a back four, moving away from the more defensive shape used against Manchester City and Aston Villa.

First Half: Ugochukwu Strikes Early

The match started evenly, with both teams battling for control in midfield. Early on, Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin recorded the first attempt on goal in the 11th minute. He tried an ambitious bicycle kick, but the effort failed to trouble Burnley’s defence.

However, Burnley soon took control. In the 18th minute, the Clarets opened the scoring after a well-worked move. Kyle Walker took a throw-in high up the pitch and received the return pass from Josh Cullen. He then delivered a superb cross deep into the Leeds penalty area. Lesley Ugochukwu, who scored Burnley’s only goal against Aston Villa, found space and powered a header into the far corner.
1–0 Burnley — a perfect start for the Clarets.

Leeds Push Back as Burnley Face Pressure

After conceding, Leeds responded by increasing the pressure. As a result, Burnley were nearly punished in the 32nd minute. A misplaced pass from a tightly pressed Jaidon Anthony allowed Jack Harrison to drive forward. He then picked out Brenden Aaronson on the left, where the midfielder had plenty of space.

Fortunately for Burnley, Aaronson’s effort lacked power. Martin Dúbravka made the initial save, but the ball rebounded off the post. Estève reacted quickly and cleared the danger to safety.

Just before half-time, Leeds earned a free kick just outside the penalty area. Summer signing Anton Stach stepped up and struck a powerful, curling effort towards the far post. Once again, Dúbravka read the flight perfectly and produced a confident save. In doing so, he underlined his importance between the posts.

Second Half: Tchaouna Seals the Victory

The second half belonged largely to Leeds, as the visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Sean Longstaff carried the ball into the final third and delivered a cross from the edge of the box towards an unmarked Harrison. The winger struck the ball on the volley, aiming for the top corner, but his effort sailed over the bar.

As Leeds continued to build momentum, Burnley struck decisively. In the 68th minute, substitute Loum Tchaouna produced a moment of brilliance. The winger received the ball well outside the penalty area, turned sharply towards goal and unleashed a stunning strike into the far corner. An unstoppable finish — and a memorable first goal for Burnley. 2–0 Burnley.

Leeds Go All-In in Search of a Way Back

Leeds threw numbers forward in desperation, leaving space at the back. In the 71st minute, Longstaff delivered another dangerous cross, finding Calvert-Lewin, who headed the ball across goal into the path of Bogle. However, the full-back failed to capitalise, sending his shot well over the bar.

Leeds created two more late chances. In the 87th minute, Gudmundsson surged forward and cut the ball back to Joël Piroe inside the box, but the striker fired over the crossbar. The visitors’ final opportunity came from a corner in the 91st minute, where centre-back Joe Rodon directed a header towards the centre of the goal. Dúbravka remained calm, collecting the ball cleanly to preserve Burnley’s clean sheet.

Match Verdict

A massive and much-needed victory for Burnley at Turf Moor against what could prove to be a direct relegation rival. The Clarets were disciplined defensively, took their chances well and showed resilience when under pressure.

While Leeds will rue their lack of clinical finishing, Burnley can take great confidence from both the result and the performance. Three vital points on the board — and a strong platform to build on moving forward in the Premier League season.
