Burnley beaten 3-0 by Tottenham Hotspur – Premier League Match Report

The Premier League is back!

Burnley’s first match in the top tier of English football ended in a tough defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Despite moments of promise, the Clarets fell 3-0 in their Premier League opener.

First Half: Richarlison Strikes Early

Burnley lined up with five at the back – Hartman, Estève, Ekdal, Walker and Sonne from left to right. Manager Scott Parker showed a more dynamic and flexible setup compared to the Championship, with Sonne pushing higher as a right midfielder when in possession.

Even though the Clarets conceded three goals in the game, Martin Dúbravka showed composure and experience between the posts, making several important saves.

Richarlison opened the scoring in the 10th minute, finishing from close range after a cross by Mohammed Kudus. Dúbravka had no chance to stop it.

Burnley’s missed chances

Despite the setback, Burnley responded with some good passing and pressure. Josh Laurent came close with a shot from outside the box, looking for an equaliser.

Kyle Walker showcased his ability to hit long passes, one perfectly finding Jaidon Anthony, who set up Hannibal. The young midfielder created a big chance but took one too many touches in the penalty area, wasting the opportunity.

Anthony also forced a save from Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario, as Burnley pushed for a response.

Second Half: Tottenham Take Control

After the break, Tottenham continued to dominate. They nearly doubled their lead from a set piece, as Micky van de Ven’s header from a corner flew just over the bar – once again highlighting Burnley’s weakness at defending set pieces.

Richarlison remained a constant threat, testing Dúbravka with another strike and pouncing on the rebound, trying to get his second goal of the game.

Goal of the Match: Richarlison’s Bicycle Kick

Tottenham’s new signing Kudus impressed on the right flank, causing problems for Burnley’s defence. The Ghanaian winger delivered a cross into the penalty area, where Richarlison executed a stunning bicycle kick to make it 2-0.

Even as a Burnley supporter, you had to admire the sheer quality of the finish – possibly a contender for goal of the season.

66th minute: Brennan Johnson Seals It

In the final stages, Brennan Johnson added a third goal, slotting home after a through ball from Pape Matar Sarr.

The result means Burnley begin their Premier League campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, but there were encouraging signs in their play, particularly in possession and in the performances of new signings.
